Capricorn Supermoon: Embracing Goals and the Beauty of Imperfection
Written on
The Capricorn Supermoon marks the largest full moon of 2022, characterized as out of bounds. It aligns with Pluto in retrograde, opposing the Cancer Sun and Ceres, while also connecting with the fixed stars Castor and Pollux—mythical twins representing Gemini. Both luminaries will create harmonious trines with Neptune, Juno, and the North Node, alongside Uranus and the South Node. Additionally, Mercury has recently returned from its out-of-bounds phase, squaring Chiron, while Venus forms a trine with Saturn today.
This celestial event involves significant astrological activity, especially for individuals with natal placements around 18–29° in Cancer, Capricorn, and other cardinal signs like Aries and Libra.
Planets deemed out of bounds, or OOB, possess volatile and unpredictable energies, often thriving on unconventional rules. They are considered out of bounds when they extend beyond 23°27' north or south of the equator, surpassing the sun's maximum latitudes during solstices, as illustrated by the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn.
The term "out of bounds" originated from the late astrologer KT Boehrer in her 1994 book, "Declination: The Other Dimension," with influence from Steven Forrest's work.
A supermoon occurs when a full moon is particularly close to Earth, reaching its perigee—the closest point in its orbit. This phenomenon leads to a larger and brighter appearance in the night sky, though visibility may require a telescope. Given that this is the largest supermoon of the year, its effects will likely be more pronounced. Astrologically, supermoons carry greater significance than standard full moons and are relatively rare; this marks the third of four occurring this year, with the next one on August 11. The term "supermoon" was coined by astrologer Richard Nolle in the 1970s.
In Capricorn, the Moon is in a state of detriment, struggling to express its inherent qualities and often finding it hard to manage emotions. Conversely, in Cancer—where the Sun currently resides—the Moon is dignified, better equipped to navigate deep feelings compared to the restrictive nature of Capricorn, ruled by Saturn.
The Full Moon in Capricorn, conjunct Pluto, may prompt individuals to take decisive action towards their aspirations. If you are on the correct path, this lunar event may affirm that direction; conversely, it could signify the need for a change in course. Pluto often unveils deep-seated fears—could a fear of success be hindering your progress? Recognizing these fears is the first step toward overcoming them. Anxiety about not being "enough" in various aspects of life can significantly impede personal growth.
The Sabian Symbol associated with this Full Moon conveys, "By accepting a defeat gracefully, a general reveals nobility of character." This implies that accepting limitations with humility can facilitate personal growth. Capricorn is often linked to perfectionism, a struggle I personally relate to as a Capricorn rising. Embracing the idea that perfection is an unattainable ideal and finding beauty in imperfection has been transformative.
The Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi resonates deeply here, particularly for those with strong Capricorn placements. Wabi-sabi encourages a perspective that embraces imperfection, impermanence, and incompletion as natural, finding value in what we previously viewed as flawed. This concept is rooted in Buddhist teachings concerning the "three marks of existence": impermanence, suffering, and emptiness.
Castor and Pollux, the mythological twin sons of Zeus, have a rich narrative. Their mother, Leda, a Spartan queen, gave birth to them after Zeus seduced her while disguised as a swan. The mythology surrounding them varies, with one twin mortal and the other divine. Their close bond is evident in the story where one twin dies in battle, prompting the other to plead with Zeus to join him in death. In a compassionate decision, Zeus allows them to alternate between immortality and mortality, enabling them to spend time together.
In one version, Castor is renowned for his equestrian skills and talents in music and science, while Pollux, the immortal twin, is celebrated for his strength and bravery. The narrative varies, highlighting the duality inherent in their character. In astrology, the fixed star Castor embodies qualities of Mercury, such as intelligence and charm but may also bring challenges like emotional turbulence. Those with prominent Castor placements often exhibit cleverness and creativity, though they may face emotional struggles.
Conversely, Pollux is characterized by Martian qualities, associated with bravery and a cunning nature. This warrior-like energy can be beneficial but may also veer towards aggression. Both Castor and Pollux offer a complex interplay of attributes, reflecting the multifaceted nature of human experience.
Astrologer Vivian Robson noted that the Sun's conjunction with Castor could indicate involvement in esoteric matters and potential accidents, while a conjunction with Pollux may suggest financial ups and downs and a tendency towards unfortunate incidents. These interpretations are not definitive but highlight the potential complexities involved.
The presence of Pluto suggests that some may experience a rewarding transformation, marking the conclusion of past efforts and the beginning of a new chapter, particularly concerning practical goals. Capricorn encourages steady, methodical progress, urging us to approach changes thoughtfully. Past obstacles may suddenly shift for the better, prompting a reassessment of what no longer serves us.
With Pluto and Mercury closely aligned with the Sun, there’s a push to confront buried emotional issues, encouraging personal responsibility for healing. This may motivate individuals to address their emotional well-being, ultimately leading to positive outcomes.
The Full Moon, ruled by Saturn, currently forms a supportive trine with Venus, emphasizing the importance of responsible choices. Saturn, retrograde in Aquarius, invites introspection regarding Capricornian matters. The Sun and Mercury’s sextile to Saturn further reinforces themes of stability and accountability.
Venus's trine to Saturn is likely to enhance motivation and confidence in pursuing long-term goals, facilitating a focus on practical steps. However, Venus's square to Neptune may induce confusion and self-doubt. It’s essential to remember that these feelings stem from Neptune's influence and will pass.
This transit may also affect relationships, either strengthening or straining them. It’s an opportune moment for commitments, such as exclusivity or proposals. However, caution is advised, as illusions may cloud perceptions of new connections. In established relationships built on trust, challenges can be navigated more effectively.
Additionally, caution should be exercised regarding substance use during this period, as sensitivity to drugs and alcohol may increase. Those in recovery may find it particularly challenging, and seeking support is encouraged.
The Sun's opposition to the Full Moon highlights the Cancer/Capricorn axis, where sensitivity varies between the two signs. Embracing healing opportunities during this time can be beneficial, as emotional intensity may be heightened.
A positive trine from the North Node and Uranus suggests that transformations may occur unexpectedly but will ultimately serve our highest good.
While this Full Moon may bring challenges, it also presents opportunities for growth and awareness, allowing us to navigate our paths more effectively. Astrology provides insight into these patterns, akin to a weather forecast.
Put forth your best effort, and remember to show kindness to yourself during this transformative time.
