Recognizing the Signs of Burnout
Experiencing burnout can often sneak up on you.
Yesterday, I found myself engulfed by a sense of being overwhelmed with my workload. Although I genuinely enjoy the tasks I tackle, there came a moment when I found myself staring blankly at my computer, unable to make a decision about my next steps. Eventually, I decided to take a few hours off, opting to sit on the couch and watch television.
This brief hiatus was beneficial. After my TV break, I took a walk, which revitalized me, allowing me to return and finish the day on a more positive note.
In recent weeks, following my transition to a full-time HR role, I've noticed a significant increase in my working hours. I've even found myself working on weekends and putting in extra hours during a recent holiday. On one hand, my dedication stems from my passion for my work. On the other hand, the workload has been overwhelming, and I'm striving to keep up.
A realization struck me yesterday: the way I've been prioritizing work outside of traditional hours, especially in the mornings, is not a sustainable strategy. Mornings are typically my time for reading and writing—moments I cherish for reflection and personal growth. This might be a key reason for my current feelings of overwhelm.
Last night, I resolved to recommit to my mornings, dedicating them to reading and writing rather than jumping straight into work. As I pen these thoughts today, I can feel the positive effects of this shift; I feel more centered and at ease, having prioritized my own needs.
Burnout is a significant issue that affects many individuals. I always associated burnout with engaging in work that lacked enjoyment. However, I've come to understand that it can also occur while pursuing your passions. After discussing my commitment to self-reflection and learning with my wife, she expressed concern that I might be edging closer to burnout. I'm thankful for my self-awareness that prompted me to recognize this and make necessary adjustments.
