Exploring Alternatives: Why I'm Leaving Notion and Jasper Behind

Written on

I’m making the decision to part ways with two tools that have been integral to my creative process: Notion and Jasper. While both have significantly contributed to my workflow, I'm now seeking a more unified solution that encompasses both note-taking and AI capabilities.

Notion has been a remarkable platform for organizing my notes, allowing accessibility from virtually any device. It has transformed my digital creation process. On the other hand, Jasper has served as a helpful AI writing assistant, aiding in content brainstorming and editing. However, I’ve never relied on it for generating extensive content, and I would advise against it.

My Discontent with AI-Written Content

As AI technology advances, so does the prevalence of content generated by it. I find myself increasingly uninterested in consuming AI-written material.

Both Notion and Jasper have been beneficial tools, yet I feel it’s time to transition away from them—at least for now.

Why I’m Moving Away from Notion

In a recent reflection, I raised some concerns regarding Notion, my once-beloved note-taking application. The Notion team has developed an incredible tool that has reshaped my digital thinking, but the inability to store my data locally or choose my own cloud service weighs heavily on my mind.

I genuinely appreciate how Notion operates; it aligns seamlessly with my thought process. Its shortcuts and commands have become second nature, allowing me to navigate and modify my notes effortlessly. However, my increasing need to document sensitive information has raised concerns. A simple to-do list doesn’t pose much risk, but including client data changes the stakes significantly.

While I trust the Notion team, the reality is that I lack control over my data's storage. Even with encryption and AWS as the hosting service, I recognize that no online solution can guarantee absolute security.

The Situation with Jasper

As for Jasper, I hold no grievances against it. I believe it’s an excellent writing assistant, particularly for those brainstorming ideas and refining their writing. I have no hesitation recommending it to anyone exploring AI in their writing process. My experience has been satisfactory, and despite its cost, I found it to offer good value.

The limitations of Jasper’s credit-based system may frustrate those expecting unlimited use. However, I never encountered this issue, likely due to my usage patterns.

In summary, Jasper remains a commendable tool, but I am opting for a new direction.

My New Direction

Currently, I am investigating alternatives like Obsidian, thanks to recommendations from others. However, I prefer a more visual approach to note-taking. I enjoy witnessing real-time changes in my work without having to rely on markdown formatting, despite the available workarounds with Obsidian.

My ideal solution would resemble Notion but enable local storage or syncing with a cloud service of my choice, such as Dropbox or Google Drive. Since such a solution is unavailable, my search for a replacement has begun.

After testing various options, I discovered Craft through my SetApp subscription. Initially, I believed Craft could serve as a viable alternative to Notion, even though I find Notion excels in certain areas.

To my surprise, Craft also integrates AI writing features. While Notion is still developing this capability, Craft offers a functional version.

Unfortunately, the AI features are not unlimited; usage depends on your subscription tier. My “Pro” subscription through Setapp provides a reasonable monthly quota, but I may consider upgrading if it exceeds my expectations. If it falls short, I can always revert to Jasper.

To test Craft, I asked its AI if an iPad qualifies as a real computer. Its response was quite reasonable.

Possible Return to Notion and Jasper?

Both Notion and Jasper are powerful tools that I appreciate for different reasons. While I look forward to seeing how Craft enhances my content planning and organization, I recognize that it may not meet all my needs.

If Craft doesn’t work out, I know I can always return to Notion and Jasper. It's also possible that I might eventually need a different solution altogether.

Regardless of the outcome, it's exciting to witness the evolution of these tools and the emergence of new ones. Currently, my main concern is the limitations of Craft's AI assistant, but I remain hopeful that it will suffice. I've reached out to the Craft team for clarification on potential limits. If it ultimately doesn't meet my requirements, Jasper will still be an option.

What are your thoughts? Could Craft replace Notion or Jasper for your needs?
