The concept of childhood birthday trauma may seem trivial at first. It can evoke images of a child unable to move past the disappointment of not receiving a desired gift or feeling left out when their peers have extravagant birthday parties. However, birthdays are rich celebrations that vary across cultures, yet they universally signify the anniversary of one’s birth—a moment typically associated with joy.

What happens, though, when a celebration intertwines with emotional turmoil?

A Shared Celebration

Everyone celebrates their birthday, but my experience was somewhat different. I shared my special day with my younger sister, who is two years my junior. We would share a cake, invite friends, and sometimes our gifts were divided between us.

While it was a shared occasion, it never felt entirely like my day. This was acceptable within my family, leading to constant comparisons between my sister and me. The running commentary about our differences became a norm, even in the presence of others.

Over time, I learned to dismiss this as a part of my reality, but those words left a profound imprint. The emotional trauma woven into my childhood has taken years for me to unravel, especially after discovering a shocking truth years later.

The Revelation

At the age of sixteen, while searching for my birth certificate to obtain a driver’s license, I stumbled upon a startling fact: my actual birthday was a day earlier than I had always been told.

Sitting on the edge of my parent's bed, I processed this revelation, before rushing downstairs to confront my father. "This says I was born on the 20th, not the 21st!" I exclaimed. Without looking up, he casually mentioned a mix-up had occurred.

In an attempt to cope with humor, I joked, "You owe me 15 years of birthday presents!" His simple “no” marked the end of the conversation. This incident, like many others, was buried within me, adding further emotional strain that I remained unaware of for years.

A Turning Point

As I approached a significant milestone birthday, I made a pivotal decision that transformed my life. Since then, I have chosen to celebrate my birthday in a way that holds personal significance.

This year, I am planning an exciting trip to the UK—a dream destination since my teenage years. On my birthday, I will be in Dublin, surrounded by the legacy of great literary figures. What better place for a writer to celebrate?

Trauma often emerges in layers, presenting opportunities for healing repeatedly. For me, associating trauma with my birthday has encouraged a yearly commitment to making choices that nurture my spirit.

This decade birthday has taught me an essential lesson: we must take ownership of our lives. Each time you honor your commitment to yourself, you pave the way for a better life.
