Exploring Menopause in Chimps: More Than Just Reproduction?

Written on

Chapter 1: The Surprising Findings on Chimp Menopause

Recent studies have uncovered that female chimpanzees experience menopause and remain alive long after their reproductive years. This revelation has taken the scientific community by surprise.

A portrait of Garbo, the oldest chimp at Ngogo.

Garbo, a 61-year-old chimpanzee, is a key subject in a comprehensive 20-year study focused on menopause among wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). Featured in Netflix’s Chimp Empire, she is introduced as the “oldest chimp at Ngogo.” Having given birth to her last offspring at the age of 38, she continues to play an active role in her community, defying expectations for a chimp past her reproductive years.

In stark contrast to typical expectations for most female species, where life expectancy diminishes after fertility ends, Garbo remains vibrant and engaged. This anomaly raises significant questions for scientists, as only a few species, like certain toothed whales, exhibit similar menopausal behavior. Previous assumptions suggested that chimpanzees would perish once they no longer could reproduce.

From an evolutionary perspective, menopause appears counterintuitive. The prevailing thought is that once women can no longer bear children, they have fulfilled their role and should ideally pass away. Yet, the Ngogo chimps present a different narrative, living on and thriving long after their reproductive phase.

Chimps Found to Undergo Menopause

This video delves into the findings of the recent study, exploring the implications of chimp menopause and its relevance to human understanding of aging and reproduction.

Section 1.1: Theories Behind Menopause in Women

Researchers have proposed several theories to explain why women continue to live past menopause, with three primary hypotheses emerging.

Subsection 1.1.1: The Grandmother Hypothesis

The "grandmother hypothesis" suggests that post-menopausal women stay alive to assist in raising their grandchildren. However, evidence from the Ngogo chimps does not support this theory, as daughters migrate from their natal groups, and no instances of grandmother chimps caring for young have been observed.

Many evolutionary biologists question the validity of this hypothesis, arguing that it doesn't account for the genetic investment involved. Why focus on grandchildren when one could continue to reproduce and pass on a higher percentage of genes?

Subsection 1.1.2: The Motherhood Hypothesis

Another theory posits that as the risks associated with childbirth increase in older mothers, women prioritize the survival of their existing children over having more offspring. This leads to a natural transition from active breeding to nurturing the younger generation.

Some researchers have even employed game theory to analyze this shift, concluding that female competition plays a crucial role. The onset of menopause coincides with the emergence of younger females vying for reproductive opportunities, prompting older women to step back.

Subsection 1.1.3: The Sisterhood Hypothesis

I propose what I call the "sisterhood hypothesis," which challenges the notion that women are merely breeding machines. Women are diverse beings with aspirations beyond motherhood. Many seek to contribute to society in various ways that do not involve traditional family structures.

Throughout history, women who outlived their reproductive years were often labeled as witches if they exhibited independence or deviated from societal norms. This stigma continues today, with outdated perceptions suggesting that older women hold little value post-menopause.

Among those who defied expectations are notable figures such as:

  • Barbara McClintock (1902–1992), awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology at age 81 for her pioneering genetic research.
  • Julia Child (1912–2004), who became a culinary sensation in her 50s.
  • Zora Neale Hurston (1891–1960), whose seminal work was published at 49.
  • Iris Apfel (1921—present), who curated a major fashion exhibit at 70.
  • Dolly Parton (1946—present), who found massive success with her album "9 to 5" at 51.

These remarkable women achieved great things without being defined by motherhood. Their contributions, while not biological, have profoundly impacted society.
