Embracing Fate: A Reflection on Life's Journey

Chapter 1: The Essence of Amor Fati
February often brings thoughts of love, right?

On the upper side of my hand, close to my thumb, is a vine tattoo, which symbolizes life and nourishment in biblical texts. On the opposite side of my hand, near my pinky, are the words "Amor Fati," meaning "love of fate," or more broadly, "embrace what comes your way." The concept of luck is an illusion.
Life is unpredictable.
It can be harsh to the most dedicated individuals or unexpectedly generous to those who lack discipline. One lesson that continually resonates with me is the importance of focusing on what is within our control. I have always maintained that luck is a myth. Typically, it is the individual who shows up consistently that ultimately reaps rewards. These rewards may differ: perhaps it’s about savoring the journey or gaining the ability to contribute more to others after navigating through life's challenges.
Each of our life stories is unique.
Unrealistic expectations can distort our perception of reality, and luck merely plays a role like a jester, often tripping over itself. Life unfolds as it will; Amor Fati serves as a gentle reminder to appreciate where you are and what you have, for this is all that truly exists.

Chapter 2: Confronting Pain and Loss
Pain and loss are unavoidable experiences.
There’s no escaping them, and now is not the time to simply say, "It's about how you respond to that pain and loss." While that statement may hold some truth, it can feel shallow and dismissive to those grappling with their struggles.
What is a more fitting expression?
Amor Fati?— when your vehicle breaks down just before a significant opportunity…
Amor Fati?— when your belongings are stolen, leaving you feeling abandoned…
Amor Fati?— when you’re in the throes of grief or enduring hardship…
Amor Fati?— when you lose someone dear, and you find yourself still here…

Amor Fati
This is the essence of our existence. It doesn’t simplify things. It doesn’t improve the situation. It’s simply what we have. Honestly, I’m grateful for your presence.
Chapter 3: The Strength to Carry On
I draw heavily from Stoic philosophy, and Amor Fati is a cornerstone of that understanding. Even with the sudden passing of my father, my sister now raising her son alone due to an absent father, and my own journey of supporting my grieving mother, I realize this is all I possess.
I must summon the strength to cherish this life and to live each day as it comes.
The poignant lines from Samuel Beckett’s Unnameable resonate deeply with me, echoing like the persistent tapping of Poe’s raven at the door. I hear Beckett's voice:
I can’t go on; I’ll go on.
I can’t go on. I’ll go on.
I can’t go on; I’ll go on.
This is what Amor Fati encourages me to embrace: to love what unfolds and to continue onward.
