Crafting Compelling Headlines: 5 Mistakes to Avoid for Success

Understanding the Importance of Headlines
You may write an incredible story, hit that publish button, and then... silence. No views. It’s easy to blame the algorithm or the number of followers, but here’s a reality check: often, the issue lies in your title.
I learned this the hard way when I decided to scrutinize my titles more closely back in April. Before that, I was struggling to reach 100 views on an average day. The evidence of my struggle was clear:
Determined for change, I set a goal to consistently achieve over 100 views. Here’s how I approached it: I analyzed my titles rigorously, examined those of successful writers on Medium, and revisited what I learned in copywriting courses. This process unveiled mistakes that had been right in front of me.
Let’s dive into the five headline pitfalls you should avoid at all costs.
Section 1.1: Common Headline Mistakes
Before we delve into those mistakes, here’s a light-hearted joke to ease the mood:
Miss Improvement calls a hotel to reserve a room. The receptionist replies, "I’m sorry, we’re fully booked." Miss Improvement confidently responds, "No, you're mistaken! There's always room for improvement!"
So, if you think your title is perfect, think again. I used to share that same confidence until I realized there was always room for enhancement.
Here are the crucial mistakes to check for:
- Relying on Gut Feelings: Initially, I based my titles on intuition, using a few simple formulas from my free writing checklist. However, I needed data to back it up. I discovered a free title analysis tool that evaluates your headline's effectiveness based on factors such as length and the use of uncommon, emotional, and power words. Here’s a list of effective words to consider:
- Uncommon Words: new, good, need, right now, found
- Emotional Words: hidden, unlock, reveal, official, fantastic
- Power Words: exclusive, unique, easy, exciting, practical
- Vague Titles: My titles often lacked clarity. For instance, I once titled a piece "How I Doubled My Views," which failed to convey the primary focus on title strategies. The lesson? Clearly define the main topic or problem you're addressing in your title.
- Inappropriate Length: Titles that are too short or excessively long can confuse readers. If your title is too brief, it lacks context; if it’s too lengthy, it may get cut off in previews. Always ensure your titles strike a balance.
- Ignoring Subtitles: I often neglected subtitles or treated them as an afterthought. However, a well-crafted subtitle can encapsulate the essence of your article and draw readers in.
- Focusing on Information Instead of Selling Ideas: This was a game changer for me. To captivate your audience, your titles need to evoke emotion and present a problem-solution approach.
As I made these changes, I shared my journey in this story:
The video, “The 5 Business English Mistakes to AVOID! (Seriously!)”, discusses common errors that can hinder your communication effectiveness, which aligns well with the importance of clear titles.
After making these adjustments, I noticed a significant uptick in my view counts. I aimed to maintain consistent daily views above 100.
By May, I achieved my goal. Now, I’m aiming for 200+ daily views. What about you?
The second video, “Top 5 Mistakes With Google Ads Headlines To Avoid”, offers valuable insights relevant to headline crafting.
