Wrestling with My Inner Troll: A Battle for Self-Respect

Chapter 1: The Inner Battle Begins

Last night at 8:30 PM, I faced a significant choice while lying in bed. After a taxing day, I could either prepare for a good night's sleep or succumb to the endless scroll of social media.

I had made impressive strides in improving my habits. I was the epitome of discipline—Andrew Huberman would have applauded my efforts! My mornings started earlier, I was meditating regularly, and I replaced my negative thoughts with uplifting ones. For the first time, consistency was my ally.

However, the troublesome troll within me refused to back down! She thrives on my self-doubt and despair, and last night, she was ravenous. She wrestled my future self into submission until the metaphorical bell rang, marking my defeat.

Two hours later, I found myself scrolling through TikTok, enveloped in self-loathing while my future self silently lamented in the corner.

What can we take away from this experience?

This morning, I woke up yearning to extract insights from my inner troll's hostile takeover. It's safe to say we all harbor our own inner troll, persistently pushing us towards a lackluster and unfulfilling life.

Some liken it to having "an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other," but I believe the concept of a troll captures it more accurately. The manipulations we face aren't always malicious; they gradually erode our self-worth.

If you're grappling with your own troll, worry not!

There is a solution: stop nurturing your troll and extend kindness to it when it threatens to dismantle everything you've strived for.

I understand it’s challenging to show compassion to your inner gremlin during these moments, but it’s the most effective method to pacify it. By withholding sustenance from the troll and "loving it away," we can diminish its power, relegating it to a shadowy existence.

One day, you might even find your inner troll endearing—but that will take time.

In the interim, prioritize nourishing "future you" with the time, energy, and attention needed to combat the troll's next emergence.

While we may occasionally lose a battle, the war for our well-being is never over! ;)
