Why Competing with Others is Not My Path to Success

Written on

Chapter 1: The Illusion of Competition

Not long ago, I had a conversation with a Facebook Ads expert who asked me, “Who are your competitors?” This question arose because I was uncertain about how to promote my business, and the easiest route seemed to be analyzing what others in my field were doing. I found myself searching for the top three video production companies nearby and shared the findings with her.

In my earlier days as a guitarist performing at pubs and events, I was incredibly competitive. I dedicated nearly six hours daily to honing my craft. Whenever a friend praised another guitarist in our circle, I'd secretly research them online to analyze their playing techniques. I would then return home, comparing myself to them, often criticizing their skills to find faults. This approach, while effective for self-improvement, turned me into a resentful individual. Unfortunately, instead of enjoying my journey as a musician, I became fixated on surpassing others, which negatively affected my mental health.

While understanding your competitors can be beneficial, especially if approached positively, my mindset back then was entirely different. I viewed my competitors as adversaries, which led to further self-harm.

Section 1.1: Why I Avoid Observing Competitors

Today, my focus is on creating brand story videos that help businesses connect with their audiences on an emotional level. The only time I glance at competitors is to examine their website designs, particularly those based in the UK or far away, as they often have more aesthetically pleasing layouts.

The reason for this is simple: upon establishing my video production company and recognizing my unique strengths, I became dedicated to my path. I trust my abilities and my journey toward success. Each entrepreneur has their unique experiences and skills that shape their path, and I believe a business's success depends on the ability to connect with clients and effectively address their needs.

From my perspective, a video lacks vitality without the human connections that underpin it.

Subsection 1.1.1: The Importance of Human Connection

Emphasizing human connections in video production

Even if you are the top video creator in your area with a significant following, if you cannot relate to your clients, your efforts may fall flat. Success is rooted in our personalities and the lessons learned throughout our journeys. This is why I avoid keeping tabs on my competitors. Furthermore, my clients tend to prioritize the message conveyed in the video over technical aspects like camera specifications or resolution. Ultimately, it all comes down to how well I can bring their ideas to life and solve their challenges—it's about establishing trust and leveraging my expertise with the right tools.

Section 1.2: My Focus on Self-Improvement

Instead of engaging in competition, I invest my free time in enhancing my skills as a filmmaker and business owner. My past experiences taught me that comparing myself to others is unproductive and diverts me from my goals—essentially, “you do you, and I’ll do me.”

I prefer to consult with industry experts to gain insights into business practices, such as pricing strategies and improving my performance during meetings. I also dedicate time to reading books and watching educational videos to further refine my abilities. In essence, I am committed to my personal journey and resist outside influences that may sway me from my path.

Chapter 2: A Collaborative Approach to Business

The first video titled "Who are your competitors, really?" explores the importance of understanding competition in a constructive way rather than a combative one. It emphasizes the value of collaboration and learning from others in your field.

The second video "Ignore your competitors (your success depends on it)" delves into why focusing on self-growth and collaboration is key to achieving success instead of fixating on competition.

At the end of the day, we are all striving to create successful businesses. With our goals and purposes in mind, we navigate challenges to serve our clients and sustain our endeavors. Shouldn't we foster a spirit of collaboration rather than competition? Ultimately, our perspective shapes our experiences and the narratives we tell ourselves.

I’d like to conclude with a phrase from a wise friend that has profoundly influenced my outlook: “Bro, don’t be an asshole, man. Just don’t.”

My name is Alfred Tanuwidjaja (Chen), and I help businesses narrate their stories through engaging, emotionally resonant films. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out.
