Fragments were excavated from 18 burial sites across southern Ukraine. The results indicated that the Scythians primarily utilized domesticated animals such as sheep, goats, cattle, and horses for leather, while furs were derived from wild creatures like foxes and wildcats.
However, the most astonishing discovery was the identification of two samples of human skin. “This provides the first concrete evidence supporting Herodotus’ claim that Scythians used the skin of their fallen foes to create leather trophies,” the researchers emphasized.
