In America, many white individuals claim not to perceive themselves as superior to those of different races. However, societal systems such as education, politics, and media perpetuate a belief that suggests otherwise. During my time abroad, I became acutely aware of this mindset. An encounter with a local revealed, “White Americans often feel they are above others. It’s so ingrained that discussing it is nearly impossible.”

I began to recognize a shift in my own perspective when strangers began mistaking me for Canadian. Their surprise upon learning I was from the U.S. signaled to me that my behavior diverged from the stereotype of an American, and I started to appreciate that as a compliment.

Recent years have shown that we need to rethink how we engage in conversations about racism. From my experience, traditional discourse proves ineffective in altering racist beliefs, much like attempting to change someone’s sexual orientation. This led me to contemplate whether biological factors might play a role in the racism exhibited by white Americans.

When viewed through a biological lens, the issue of racism opens up new avenues for understanding. Even if no genetic correlation to racism is established, exploring this question can help us mend societal rifts.

To effectively dismantle racist ideologies, we must engage in genuine, scientific discussions about whether the inclination toward white supremacy is rooted in biology or culture.

Questions that make people uncomfortable are crucial for progress. For instance, is there a genetic tendency toward racism among all white individuals or just those in America?

The instinctive aversion to such inquiries indicates how deeply ingrained these beliefs are.

America's foundational ideology is steeped in the false notion of racial superiority.

Even historical figures like Thomas Jefferson recognized the moral failings of slavery. As a society, we must strive for an understanding that goes beyond mere acknowledgment of past wrongs.

The discomfort of contemplating white inferiority underscores the need for a collective effort to confront and dismantle these biases.

In conclusion, acknowledging that there is no scientific evidence supporting the idea of a “racism gene” among whites is vital. Doing so requires an intentional shift in thought processes and societal discourse.

This challenge reflects the broader struggle against institutionalized racism in America, and it is essential for fostering a more just society.
