The rise of technostress has surged since 2003, and its prevalence shows no sign of abating (Bondanini et al., 2020).

As technology evolves, the manifestations of stress have transformed, especially as the modern workforce navigates a landscape laden with digital demands. Unlike our ancestors, who faced threats related to survival, today's challenges often revolve around achieving success in our careers (Mhaidli & Roemmich, 2024).

Technostress can manifest in various forms, often triggered by an overload of information or anxiety about the necessity to learn new technologies. This article aims to illuminate this misunderstood response and offers insights on how to manage and prevent it.

What is Technostress?

Despite my background in psychology and biomedical science, I only recently encountered the term "technostress." While many are aware of the symptoms associated with excessive technology use, few recognize it as a distinct phenomenon.

Numerous headlines suggest that our digital era poses risks to mental health. Amidst these claims, technostress stands out, backed by scientific research that highlights its detrimental effects. Stress is a natural reaction to perceived dangers, and understanding its origins can help mitigate its impact.

How Does it Differ From Standard Stress?

The primary distinction between standard stress and technostress lies in the stimuli involved; technostress specifically pertains to technology-related pressures. This form of stress can stem from various sources, including workplace dynamics and personal perceptions about one’s capabilities.

Typical Symptoms of Technostress

Common symptoms include: - Extreme fatigue - Frustration and lack of focus - Sleep disturbances - Decreased motivation - Anxiety and restlessness - Reduced productivity - Declining self-confidence

Long-term exposure to stress can severely affect physical and mental health, triggering evolutionary responses that, if prolonged, can lead to significant health issues (Russell & Lightman, 2019).

  1. Techno-overload:
    • Pressure from excessive information and workflow demands.
    • Difficulty managing numerous notifications and messages.

    • The blurring of boundaries between work and personal life, exacerbated by remote work trends.

    • Feelings of inadequacy regarding technological skills, which can hinder productivity.
  4. Techno-uncertainty:
    • Struggling to keep pace with rapid technological changes in the workplace.
  5. Techno-insecurity:
    • Irrational fears about being outpaced by advancements or replaced due to insufficient knowledge.

The Future & Prevention

As technology continues to evolve, technostress may become an integral part of our coping mechanisms. Preparing for these changes through education and psychological support is crucial.

To combat technostress, employers should provide clarity regarding technological expectations and foster an environment where employees feel confident in their abilities. This transparency can enhance workplace satisfaction and productivity.
