Digital Intelligence — Chapter 6b
The Necessity of Simplicity in Designs and Specifications
In the previous segment, I highlighted the significance of "Intelligent Simplification." In this succinct chapter, I aim to illustrate how simplifying designs and specifications can create a beneficial scenario for both service providers and consumers.
Simplicity in designs and specifications is crucial for digital initiatives. It profoundly affects the later stages of modernization and transformation, particularly during service delivery and support. The more straightforward the designs and specifications are, the more efficient the delivery and support processes become.
First, let’s discuss the importance of design before moving on to specifications. There are two main considerations for managing designs and their configurations in digital projects:
- Designs should be straightforward enough for all parties to understand, evaluate, and execute.
- Despite their importance, designs can appear complex to non-technical team members and business stakeholders. Therefore, they need to be articulated clearly during discussions.
A well-known method for achieving design simplicity is through design thinking. This approach, combined with agile methodologies, can effectively facilitate simplification.
Agile methods focus on simplifying architecture, design, and specifications through iterative problem-solving. Progressing through small iterations can often be more manageable than attempting to address larger tasks as seen in traditional approaches.
By applying agile principles during the design phase, complex requirements can be broken down into simpler use cases that reflect the needs of different personas.
An agile approach allows intricate systems to be divided into smaller, more manageable components. Technical professionals can simplify the relationships within systems using iterative flows and smaller foundational elements.
Today, most digital services are accessed via mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. Thus, mobile designs must emphasize simplicity by minimizing clutter on small screens. Design constructs and configurations for consumer devices should focus solely on essential elements.
Creating complex systems necessitates a modular and service-oriented approach. This method is well-established within the technology sector.
Another effective strategy for digital projects involves conducting a domain-based review of simplifying components within technology infrastructure, applications, architecture, middleware, security, networks, and data domains.
To better understand design simplification in technology, consider the concept of containers. Containers break down interdependent architectures and design elements into discrete, manageable components.
A container acts as a loosely coupled system, encapsulating an entire runtime environment. This bundle may include system dependencies, binaries, libraries, and configuration files. These emerging techniques contribute to a more straightforward design process in digital ventures.
Savvy digital leaders need to prioritize simplicity throughout the design lifecycle. From the outset, they should hold workshops to emphasize the importance of intuitive, user-centric designs grounded in simplicity principles.
As designs evolve into system specifications, it’s essential to simplify these detailed explanations as much as possible, keeping usability in mind.
Historically, extensive time and resources were invested in crafting specifications for software and hardware products. This often resulted in substantial costs for projects, consuming the efforts of many skilled engineers and technical specialists.
However, it became clear that the returns on these intricate specifications were often lower than anticipated. Some projects even faced financial difficulties due to funds allocated to unnecessary specifications.
Digital trends, mobile culture, and agile methodologies have significantly transformed how cumbersome specifications are handled, particularly for in-house users and business consumers.
The intricate technical details once included in user specifications have proven largely unnecessary. Consequently, agile methods advocate for simplifying convoluted specifications into a format known as "user stories."
User stories are concise templates that outline functionalities, capabilities, and specifications from the perspectives of in-house users and business consumers.
Creating and understanding user stories, typically confined to a single page, can be far more efficient and effective than navigating through hundreds of pages of traditional specifications.
In contemporary digital ventures, specifications are more concise and easier to digest. This straightforward approach benefits both service providers and consumers.
