Rethinking Ageism: Beyond the Simplistic Narratives
Written on
Chapter 1: The Oversimplification of Age
Ageism often manifests in oversimplified statements like, “Anyone could do this!” However, the reality of aging is far more nuanced than such clichés suggest.
Age is not merely a number; it intertwines with luck and individual circumstances.
Section 1.1: Misleading Inspirations
It’s frustrating to see social media posts that proclaim, “70-Year-Old Bodybuilder: He transformed his life and began exercising at 44. An inspiration for all!” This viewpoint is excessively simplistic. For instance, while forty-four is relatively young, individuals like Olga Kotelko began competing in track and field at 77, and Wille Murphy fended off a burglar at 82. Yet, for many, such achievements are unattainable.
Some may find themselves unable to engage fully in physical activity due to uncontrollable health issues. These can include visual impairments that limit weightlifting capabilities or chronic knee problems.
Subsection 1.1.1: Personal Fitness Journey
I’m passionate about fitness and work out multiple times a week. Research highlights the myriad benefits of physical activity, from alleviating stress to enhancing immune function and reducing stroke risk. My commitment to staying active will remain until the very end. When the time comes to stop, it will be final.
People often tell me, “You’ll have a long life because you exercise.” Perhaps, but longevity is influenced by factors beyond our control.
Section 1.2: The Luck Factor in Longevity
Not everyone who engages in weightlifting will achieve a bodybuilder’s physique, nor will everyone enjoy the anticipated benefits of their active lifestyle.
For example, I once knew an elderly woman who smoked two packs a day and neglected her diet. Despite being overweight and having a family history of heart disease, she consistently passed her medical evaluations, showing no signs of imminent health issues.
Conversely, I recall a man in his seventies who maintained an active lifestyle filled with daily walks and cultural events, coupled with a balanced diet. Despite his healthy habits, he suddenly developed a debilitating condition that severely impacted his mobility, leaving him without the activities that had once brought him joy.
Chapter 2: The Myth of Universal Ability
In the video titled "Confronting Ageism with Ashton Applewhite," viewers are encouraged to reflect on the pervasive stereotypes surrounding aging and how they affect our perceptions and experiences.
The second video, "How To Recognize Ageism In The Workplace - 6 Warning Signs You Should Know," delves into the subtle yet impactful signs of ageism, especially in professional environments.
I continue to prioritize my fitness, but I remain realistic about what it can achieve. Slogans like “Age is not a barrier” or “Anyone can do this” can unfairly suggest that those who struggle simply haven’t tried hard enough. They fail to acknowledge that some individuals face significant challenges beyond their control.
It's equally stereotypical to claim that one must slow down at certain ages, reinforcing negative perceptions about aging.
Catharine (“Cathy”) Goodwin, a former college professor turned online marketing consultant, offers a candid perspective on aging. In her upcoming book, When I Get Old I Plan To Be A Bitch, she challenges conventional narratives about aging with humor and honesty. The book, set for release in July 2022, features provocative chapter titles such as “I Ain’t Miss Congeniality” and “Take This Pill and Shove It.” Stay tuned for its availability!
