My experience with CASP has been as an assessor on two occasions. In this role, I evaluate the protein structure models submitted by various predictors, relying on "real" structures that have been experimentally determined by generous contributors from academia.

Aside from my role as an assessor, I am familiar with many predictor groups, other assessors, and the CASP organizers. Given my background in structural biology, I frequently employ these tools in my research. It’s worth noting that the CASP organizers facilitate connections between contributors of actual structures and the modellers and assessors.

If by "drivers" you refer to predictors' participation, CASP provides an impartial, structured environment to evaluate the efficacy of modeling techniques. While one may possess a superior tool and publish compelling research, the objective evaluations from CASP lend credibility to such tools.

Regarding "Consequences on research output," could you clarify whose output you’re referring to? Are you interested in the overall impact on biology/pharmaceuticals or specifically within the realm of protein structure prediction?

Section 1.2: Insider Perspectives on the Competition

Subsection 1.2.1: The Intersection of Computer Science and Biology

Numerous computer scientists have transitioned into biological research and are addressing a variety of challenges in this domain. Conversely, many biologists (as well as physicists and chemists) have acquired computer science skills and have shifted their focus to this field. Therefore, it would be misleading to assume that the field is dominated solely by computer scientists. In fact, many contributors are physicists who possess substantial knowledge in computer science while also being well-versed in chemistry and biology. (Just to clarify, I’m a chemist and biotechnologist, not a physicist!)

Chapter 2: The Impact of Deep Learning on AlphaFold

> Especially since the advent of Deep Learning.

It's true that there is a significant application of machine learning in AlphaFold. However, DeepMind's team comprised diverse talents, and a lot of rigorous machine learning research is also being conducted in academic circles.

DeepMind didn’t derive their solutions from nothing; they built upon years of foundational work from academic institutions. AlphaFold 1 merely advanced the existing academic contributions to their limits (and won, but by a narrow margin). In contrast, AlphaFold 2 represented a genuine re-invention of numerous methodologies, a topic we can explore further.
