A Touching Letter from 33-Year-Old Me to My 23-Year-Old Self

Chapter 1: A Decade of Reflection

Dear Angela,

On this day ten years ago, you were reveling in what felt like the best summer of your life. Fresh off a five-month journey studying in China, you were about to embark on your first full-time role in New York City. Your enthusiasm was palpable as you aimed to showcase your dedication and capability to those around you.

However, that initial thrill soon faded into a sense of disillusionment. During your first consulting assignment, you found yourself trapped in a conference room for 11 hours a day, often losing sight of your own needs. At one point, you swapped your black heels for vibrant neon orange and blue sneakers, convinced that no one would notice. You were mistaken—until the project director caught a glimpse beneath the table and asked, “Angie, are you wearing tennis shoes?” You smiled awkwardly, but inside, you sensed that you were not destined to confine yourself to heels or stuffy rooms. Your spirit craved something more fulfilling.

Fast forward to now, and your life is beyond what you could have envisioned a decade ago. Remember that travel collage you crafted at 18? You’d be thrilled to know that over the past two years, you've explored and lived in nine different countries, all on your own. You've managed to leave behind the heels, the cramped conference settings, and the confines of New York.

Yet, life has presented its share of challenges. The next ten years will be filled with trials—embracing opportunities that may not align with family expectations, accepting your imperfections, establishing boundaries, and confronting loss in its many forms. You come to understand that loss teaches us to appreciate what we have while it lasts.

You’ve realized that not only do you not wish to reside in New York City, but you also don’t desire to stay in the U.S. Although the future remains uncertain, you’ve learned to embrace the unpredictability of life—the only true constant.

You are surrounded by friends from around the globe who uplift and inspire you, expanding your worldview through profound conversations and spiritual journeys. You learn that love extends beyond romantic relationships; it's about embracing compassion for everyone around you. The notion that one person can complete you is a myth, often perpetuated by Disney.

However, it's essential to remember that Disney is made up of imperfect people, all striving to do their best. Over the last decade, you've discovered the power of forgiveness—understanding that it’s a gift you give yourself, rather than the person who hurt you. You’ve learned to free yourself from the burden of expectations, forgiving others bit by bit, as they say in Spanish, "poco a poco."

The past ten years have not been without difficulties, but they have provided fertile ground for personal growth. I am proud to see how much you’ve transformed—almost unrecognizable from your former self. I eagerly anticipate the next decade, hoping that 43-year-old me will find present-day Angela equally surprising. Until then, continue to love yourself as deeply as you love others.

With all my love,

Angela
