Embracing New Beginnings: A Journey of Kindness and Health

Chapter 1: A New Morning Routine
Reflecting on my journey towards better health has proven to be incredibly rewarding. The support I've received from so many warm-hearted individuals has truly taken me by surprise. It’s heartening to know I’m not alone in this quest.
This encouragement keeps me accountable, which is something I truly need. Additionally, many of you have shared invaluable insights that have guided me along the way.
While my weight has slightly increased, I believe this is due to water retention and natural fluctuations. I remind myself not to dwell on these changes. Patience is essential, especially since I often seek instant results. It’s curious that, in general, I am a patient person, yet I struggle with the numbers on the scale.
Today, I skipped my morning walk as we made our way to Johor Bahru (JB), Malaysia, by car. I wanted to fit in one last visit before the school holidays officially began this afternoon, which often brings chaotic traffic.
Section 1.1: The Toll Incident
When traveling, you need a Touch 'n Go card to pay tolls. Today, my partner panicked as he couldn’t find his amidst his other cards. He rummaged through them, but time was running out as we approached the toll booth.
I remained calm, thinking that the worst-case scenario would be turning back—disappointing but not disastrous. I take this situation lightly since I’m not behind the wheel. My partner saves money on petrol, groceries, and the car wash, and every bit counts with rising inflation.
After passing through Singapore's immigration, we reached the JB side. A kind lady at the booth suggested we ask the car behind us for assistance. She encouraged us to use their card and reimburse them in cash.
Feeling nervous, I approached the car behind us to speak with strangers. In Singapore, starting a conversation like that is uncommon. The driver, a man around my age with his mother, kindly waved off my offer to pay him back. Instead, he walked to the counter and paid the toll for us.
This act of kindness renewed my faith in humanity. The driver's car had a Malaysian number plate, confirming his identity. I couldn’t help but wonder if a Singaporean would have done the same.
I often wish we could embody the same kindness. In Malaysia, even supermarket cashiers exude warmth and friendliness. It’s this easygoing nature that draws me to the country.
While Singapore may be wealthier in currency value, we often lack this essential quality. Why can’t we be kinder? I often lament this, wishing for more patience and humility. Perhaps this could be taught in schools, but the workplace culture sometimes dampens our kindness. Is it a sense of privilege that leads to taking things for granted?
We also have a troubling complaint culture, likely stemming from strict regulations and the illegality of protests. This might explain the pent-up frustrations people feel.
Subsection 1.1.1: Health Goals Achieved
Today, I am thrilled to report that I walked 5,027 steps (approximately 3.3 kilometers). I find myself walking more in JB, as the malls there are much larger than those in Singapore.
Here's how I fared yesterday (Day 1).
Waking up early has uplifted my spirits and instilled hope within me. I’m grateful that I managed to achieve this today.
Despite the multitude of tempting snacks around me, I managed to resist. Initially, I considered skipping breakfast, but after being awake for over three hours, hunger struck. I had been tossing and turning since midnight, but I hope my sleep improves as I establish a more regular routine.
In the end, I indulged in wanton mee (dumpling noodles), which was both delicious and satisfying—the key for me being fulfillment.
Afterwards, my partner felt hungry again around noon. While he enjoyed dim sum, I practiced restraint and opted for just one char siew pau (steamed BBQ pork bun) and some iced water.
Even though the menu offered enticing options like passionfruit juice and Yu tiao (fried dough sticks), I maintained my resolve.
I left Malaysia for Singapore feeling guilt-free.
Temptation lurks everywhere in Asia, especially for food lovers. However, this culinary paradise is a dream for tourists. The variety of food in both Malaysia and Singapore is phenomenal, thanks to our multicultural heritage.
Chapter 2: Celebrating Malaysian Talent
I would like to take this moment to appreciate the talented Malaysian writers who have contributed beautiful stories and photography to our publication. Your involvement enriches our community.
One delightful foodie piece was written by HyaenaDad titled "Braving High Hell For The Ultimate Meal."
Another captivating cultural story was shared by TzeLin Sam called "You Know It’s Almost Chinese New Year When Everything Is Going Red," showcasing the festive spirit.
I look forward to introducing more writers from various countries in the future and highlighting their remarkable stories. Our community is growing, and I cherish the personal connections we are forming.
