Finding the Right Balance: Quality vs Quantity in Writing

Chapter 1: The Challenge of Building an Audience
As I embark on my journey to grow an audience, I’ve encountered a significant challenge in the realm of online writing: the dilemma of quality versus quantity. Striving for excellent writing while also aiming for quick publication can feel like a balancing act.
This week, I’ve reflected on how to achieve this equilibrium, realizing that it isn’t as straightforward as I initially thought. When it comes to cultivating an audience, you often find that choices are limited.
Section 1.1: Defining Quality and Quantity
Let's clarify what we mean by quality and quantity.
When we talk about quality writing, we refer to pieces that are:
- Engaging
- Informative
- Original
- Enjoyable
- Genuine
- Well-structured
- Relevant to current trends
- Reader-friendly
The more of these attributes your writing possesses, the better it is considered to be.
On the other hand, quantity pertains to how often you publish. The more frequently you share your work, the better your chances of reaching an audience, especially on platforms like Medium.
At first, I didn't fully grasp this concept. While I was aware of the high posting frequency on other social media platforms—some writers manage to tweet ten times a day—I initially thought they were simply looking for attention. I assumed that those posting daily on LinkedIn were desperate for job opportunities.
To my surprise, I discovered that many successful writers on Medium post nearly every day, with one claiming to publish five times daily. This raised my own questions about the quality versus quantity dilemma.
Subsection 1.1.1: The Reader's Perspective
As a reader, I value quality. There’s a noticeable difference when a writer has invested time and effort into their work. I aspire to produce similarly high-quality content. However, my perspective has shifted.
Section 1.2: The Skiing Analogy
I began to view this challenge through the lens of skiing. Initially, descending the mountain—much like writing a simple post—can be time-consuming, especially on easy green slopes.
After some practice, you become adept at navigating those slopes more swiftly, allowing you to tackle more challenging runs. The aim is to create high-quality content that captivates and expands your audience.
However, there’s an essential truth: you cannot afford to take a year to complete a post, just as you can’t spend forever skiing down the slopes.
When building an audience, speed is crucial. You must be prepared to publish frequently. It’s akin to skiing, where you must embrace the pace instead of walking leisurely through a park.
Chapter 2: Embracing the Speed of Writing
The video titled "Teaching Reading and Writing in the Young Learner Classroom" highlights effective strategies for engaging young learners through writing, emphasizing the importance of balancing speed and quality in educational contexts.
As we delve deeper into the quality versus quantity debate, it becomes evident that there isn’t a true conflict. It’s not merely about writing well or writing quickly; rather, it’s about selecting the right path.
Initially, you might focus on simpler posts to ensure a safe descent down the mountain. As your skills improve, you can either increase the frequency of simpler posts or take on more ambitious projects.
Regardless of your chosen approach, one fact remains indisputable: you cannot afford to take it slow. To truly thrive in the online writing landscape, you must commit to skiing down the slopes, not walking.
