The term 'crazy,' in this context, serves as a societal euphemism that belittles and undermines an individual's conclusions. When this label is applied, even credible voices can be marginalized, erasing their contributions simply because they hold dissenting views. This phenomenon is well-known; a person can be correct yet still face dismissal, akin to having their work disregarded.

Science, while fundamentally about evolution and discovery, often resists change. This is evident in debates surrounding topics like string theory, even as supporting evidence dwindles. Consider, for example, individuals with bipolar disorder whose emotional responses are legitimate reflections of their experiences. Phrases like "you're having a bipolar moment" or questions about medication adherence not only lack compassion but can be harmful.

As someone interested in UFOs and also working in mental health, I have found that not all visitors to community clinics are believers in extraterrestrial phenomena. While some may possess extensive knowledge, others engage in conversation about UFOs with curiosity. I once met a person who seemed to have read more on the subject than I had, recalling numerous authors and titles. Despite their struggles with other challenges that might lead to ridicule, their insights are valid and deserve respect.

Their conclusions are just as credible as those of the authors they reference, many of whom have impressive qualifications. The foundation of academic inquiry relies on synthesizing information from diverse sources, and this individual’s ability to recall and organize knowledge could merit recognition in an undergraduate philosophy course. In fact, there may be more laypeople familiar with UFO lore than academics in their specific fields.

Chapter 4: The Credentials of UFO Researchers

To reiterate, an individual who has read even a fraction of the available literature on UFOs, demonstrating basic recall, possesses sufficient scholarly merit to earn academic acknowledgment. Even if their findings intersect with UFO phenomena through hypnotic regression, they present valid contributions to the discussion. Carl Sagan, another respected figure, proposed an ancient alien theory, which is often overlooked in debates about skepticism.

Simply dismissing the notion of extraterrestrial life is not a scholarly stance. If one has not engaged with the available literature advocating for the possibility of alien existence, their position may reflect bias rather than informed skepticism. I wonder if Neil deGrasse Tyson genuinely believes in the possibility of extraterrestrial life but feels compelled to remain silent to protect his reputation or financial standing. Yet, I believe he possesses the humility to admit when he is mistaken, a quality that should be inherent in scientific discourse. After all, science is fundamentally human, and humanity is crucial to the practice of science.
