Essential Traits of Exceptional Tech Managers: Building Strong Teams

Written on

Chapter 1: The Importance of Tech Managers in Product Management

You might be asking why a product manager is discussing the qualities of outstanding tech managers. This is a valid question! In many organizations, the relationship between product teams and engineering can be challenging. However, a strong collaboration between these two groups is essential for success, though it often falls short.

As a product manager, my effectiveness hinges on a solid partnership with my development lead and technical leadership. Give it a try; I guarantee you won't accomplish much without it. Fortunately, I've had the chance to collaborate with some truly remarkable tech managers.

What sets these individuals apart?

Section 1.1: Humility as a Core Trait

One of the most impressive engineering managers I've encountered once said, “I suppose I’m doing well; they keep assigning me more people to lead.” Don't let the modesty fool you—this person is an exceptional leader, inspiring others to follow him, which results in his teams continually expanding.

Tech managers can either present themselves as aloof and know-it-alls or be inviting and eager to learn. If you choose the latter, you'll attract a team eager to work under your guidance. Great tech leaders recognize that their education is never complete.

In the rapidly evolving tech landscape, the expertise that brought you to your current role may not suffice for future challenges. The best leaders remain receptive to change, actively seeking to understand new concepts and collaborating with their teams to navigate evolving challenges.

Section 1.2: Empathy in Leadership

Many outstanding tech leaders didn’t begin their careers in technology. Several transitioned from fields like design or operations before moving into tech and eventually ascending to leadership roles. This diverse experience enhances their understanding of the business and its interdependencies with technology.

They foster empathy within their tech teams, encouraging an outcome-focused approach that drives change. An empathetic manager cultivates a supportive and safe work environment, where team members feel valued as individuals, not just employees. This atmosphere encourages innovation and a willingness to explore new ideas, even if they might fail.

Chapter 2: Staying Engaged with the Team

Did the Vice President of Engineering just review your pull request? Surprising, right? But this isn't intended to intimidate; it shows they genuinely care.

Exceptional tech leaders maintain a clear understanding of the technology their teams are working with. They know what the teams are building and provide valuable guidance without overstepping boundaries. I’ve found it incredibly helpful when tech managers engage in discussions about complex issues like data models or inquire about what the team is learning during their exploratory phases.

This kind of interest and support is what distinguishes a great manager, ensuring teams feel backed and empowered.

The first video, "What Makes a GREAT Manager? (it's not what you think)," delves into the unanticipated qualities that define effective managers and how they foster productive teams.

Section 2.1: The Art of Time Management

“Past time is finite; future time is infinite.” — Edwin Powell Hubble

Incredibly, great tech managers seem to find time where there appears to be none. They consistently prioritize what matters most to their teams. Whether it's addressing a production issue, engaging in architectural discussions, or participating in difficult team conversations, they are present and attentive.

These managers keep a close watch on their teams, stepping in to assist when necessary while also empowering them to work independently.

Section 2.2: Fostering Team Growth

One tech manager astutely noted, “We’re recruiting many senior engineers, which is fantastic, but we also need to bring in some juniors to cultivate a growth pipeline within the organization.”

It’s commendable to seek top talent, but without a strategy for promoting internal growth, new hires may feel stagnant. Exceptional tech managers focus on future opportunities, identifying areas for development and advocating for new roles for their team members.

This approach often involves hiring junior talent, allowing senior engineers to take on leadership and mentorship roles, thereby creating a supportive environment as the organization scales. While this isn't always easy, transparent communication about growth plans typically leads to higher retention rates among engineers who feel appreciated for their commitment and valued for their knowledge.

The second video, "Top 5 skills you NEED to work in tech," outlines essential skills for success in the tech industry, providing insights that can enhance your career.

What other qualities do you think are vital in tech managers? How has fostering relationships with technical teams influenced your journey as a product manager?
