Mentorship is often perceived as a means to give back, a way to impart the knowledge and expertise one has gathered over the years.
But what if I told you that the act of mentoring can be just as enlightening for the mentor as it is for those being mentored? This was a revelation I encountered while mentoring a group of Zambian startups as part of the Ambitious Africa x Great Zambezi Initiative. My unexpected journey into this role proved profoundly impactful, not only for the startups but for my personal growth as well. Here’s how this experience reshaped my outlook on life.
The Joy of Collective Achievement
One of the most fulfilling parts of this journey was witnessing the progress of the startups I mentored. Four out of the seven startups I engaged with earned spots in the top 10 and subsequently joined the Valid-8 Accelerator program. Their success felt like a personal triumph. More than that, it highlighted the importance of collaboration and shared efforts.
This experience redefined my understanding of success. It transcended mere goal achievement or target fulfillment; it revolved around the relationships we nurtured, the trust we built, and the joy of seeing others flourish thanks to the guidance and support provided. I was reminded that true leadership is about uplifting others and finding fulfillment in their accomplishments.

It’s one thing to read about these challenges in reports, but witnessing their effects firsthand and collaborating with individuals striving to devise solutions on the ground deepened my understanding of these critical matters. It also reinforced my commitment to leveraging my skills and knowledge for meaningful change.

Throughout my mentorship journey, I encountered invaluable lessons in humility and patience. Not every moment was smooth; setbacks, doubts, and slow progress were part of the process. Mentoring Zambian startups was among the most transformative experiences of my life.
