Embrace Focus Over Impostor Syndrome: A Journey to Growth

Chapter 1: The Winter Morning Inspiration
On a chilly winter morning, the clock strikes 7:30 am, and I find myself gravitating towards the coffee machine. Each sip brings me closer to my writing chair, which has slowly sunk in the middle—a testament to my dedication.
As I begin drafting a story, I relish the energy coursing through me, fueled by the words that flow effortlessly from my fingertips. My fingers dance across the keyboard, crafting sentences, until suddenly, reality intrudes. The distractions of modern life—endless notifications, social media feeds, and news updates—pull me away from my creative space.
Despite the advice to "dance like no one is watching," my mind is restless, unable to "write like no one is reading." I once believed that impostor syndrome was the root of my hesitation to share my work. However, I've come to realize that my real struggle lies in the shiny object syndrome.
Every time I see someone else's solo venture flourishing, I feel a surge of motivation to enhance my own. When I encounter a competitor gaining media attention, my focus shifts to pitching my ideas. Reading the success stories of established authors shifts my energy towards chasing virality.
Caught in this cycle of comparison, I often find myself jumping from one success story to the next, which ultimately proves counterproductive. Experiencing impostor feelings indicates you’re pushing beyond your comfort zone. It’s a challenging yet enriching experience.
Impostor syndrome signifies growth, whereas shiny object syndrome leads to procrastination. While it's beneficial to diversify your efforts and explore various projects, aimless chasing can dilute your strengths and distract you from your primary objectives—like a carrot dangling in front of a horse!
The most accomplished individuals I know are so engrossed in nurturing their own pursuits that they hardly glance at what others are doing. Focus is essential!
I am adopting a mindset that prioritizes 2–3 key goals that I will pursue relentlessly, without succumbing to unnecessary distractions. The number of followers another writer has or the funding a startup receives doesn’t concern me. Instead, I focus on my yearly progress.
Am I closer to achieving profitability for my startup? Am I making strides in my writing endeavors on platforms like Medium? Am I moving toward my dream of authoring a book? Am I stepping out of my comfort zone with new projects? Most importantly, am I finding fulfillment in my work?
If the answer to these questions is a resounding yes, then I am indeed growing. It’s time to stop letting external distractions divert my attention from what truly matters.
