Creating Wealth and Losing Weight: Similar Journeys to Success

Written on

Chapter 1: The Parallels Between Weight Loss and Wealth Creation

The journey towards financial stability and weight loss shares remarkable similarities. While most of us are aware of what needs to be done, the challenge lies in taking the necessary steps.

Recently, my doctor candidly told me, "The party is over. In your youth, your body could endure the consequences of overeating, but now it's time to shed those extra pounds. You need to lose ten pounds—immediately."

— Max’s Doctor (identity withheld)

Consequently, I’ve decided to embark on a weight loss journey. However, my understanding of effective weight loss strategies is limited, primarily based on foundational principles. I believe the process is straightforward, yet I struggle to take action. One essential truth remains clear:

“If weight loss is our goal, we must consistently consume FEWER calories than we burn.”

— Steve Kamb of Nerd Fitness

This concept isn’t overly complex, yet implementing it proves to be a significant challenge.

Many people also aspire to establish greater financial security. The principle is similarly simple:

“The most important lesson is probably to spend less than you earn.”

— Derek Sivers

So, why do we often overlook such obvious solutions? This question resonates deeply with me, especially regarding my struggles with both weight loss and financial growth. I feel stagnant, as if nothing is changing. What could be the root of this stagnation?

Julia Cameron poses a thought-provoking question:

“My payoff for staying blocked is [fill in the blank].”

In my case, particularly concerning my financial situation, I believe the answer is fear. Yes, that dreaded four-letter word. By not acting on my ideas, I can sidestep the potential embarrassment that might accompany failure. The thought of falling flat is daunting, so I choose to ignore that nagging feeling in my stomach.

I have an idea to boost my income, yet I find myself hesitant to start. I keep waiting—for what, I’m not entirely sure. My time is consumed by trivial tasks, and I’m often distracted by the most mundane interruptions, which leaves me feeling irritable.

Bob Proctor describes this experience as encountering what he calls “The Terror Barrier.”

To navigate through this mental hurdle, I’ve researched Proctor’s recommended strategies and found a particularly insightful quote. Here’s a summary:

“Feel the fear and do it anyway.” — Susan Jeffers

Here’s the longer version:

“You need to comprehend what’s really scaring you. It’s often an imaginary concept, one that doesn’t hold much weight. So what if you fail? Everyone experiences failure. Your life continues; the world doesn’t stop. Failure is a natural part of the journey to success.

Are we going to remain safely behind the terror barrier? Life will lack excitement if we do. You must decide to push through it. You have to step forward and take control. It’s a daunting process, but the sense of accomplishment afterward is worth it.”

— Bob Proctor

How do I plan to conquer my fear of failure? By confronting the very things that terrify me. I will start today.

Here are some encouraging thoughts to support me—and perhaps you—on our new paths:

“Remember, the Terror Barrier appears every time we make significant changes in our lives. It’s as natural as day turning into night. Instead of allowing it to stop you, recognize it and say, ‘Ah, there it is again. This must signify something important for me!’”

A final thought to inspire you:

“The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.” — Joseph Campbell

Indeed, this post contains numerous quotes, but my pursuit of truth remains unwavering, regardless of where it leads me. I don’t mind how many quotes I encounter or how many books I read; I am determined to find my way.

I hope you’re gaining insights from my journey, and I sincerely wish you the best as you embark on or continue your own path toward a brighter future.

All the best…

Max
