A Call for a Total Ban on SUVs as Paris Raises Parking Fees

Recently, the City of Paris, France, announced a significant increase in parking fees for SUVs, which will now cost drivers 200 Euros per vehicle. This initiative aims to foster a more bike-friendly environment in the city.
Proponents of this measure argue that these oversized vehicles pose environmental risks and safety hazards. While motorist associations are pushing back against the changes, it appears that the policy will be implemented.
I believe similar actions should be taken in the UK. In fact, I advocate for an outright prohibition on the sale of off-road vehicles unless the buyer has a farm, trailer, or a valid reason for needing one.
A Personal Encounter with Danger
I have a knee injury resulting from an incident with an off-road vehicle. The driver collided with the rear of our small car while we were waiting to exit at a roundabout. They weren’t tailgating us when we halted; rather, they drove a considerable distance on the slip road before realizing we were there—only after the impact.
It’s fortunate that we weren’t pedestrians; the outcome could have been fatal.
Owners of these large vehicles often claim to feel secure and invincible on the road, but the reality is that those they collide with are far from safe.
These vehicles, equipped with imposing front bars, are capable of inflicting far more damage than standard cars, all while leaving the driver unscathed.
The repercussions for reckless driving are limited to increased insurance costs, unless someone is killed; even then, the penalties are often less severe than for other types of homicide.
Furthermore, these monstrous vehicles present a heightened danger to cyclists and pedestrians, yet they remain a status symbol for those seeking to impress others.
Looking Back and Moving Forward
My accident occurred nearly two decades ago, and due to the worsening condition of my knee, I may require surgery soon. Although I have been managing the pain, I would prefer not to endure this struggle.
Regarding the operation of these vehicles on public roads, I stand in solidarity with Parisian authorities: those who choose to drive such cars should face higher parking fees.
Perhaps it is time for London to adopt a similar strategy, or even better, implement a complete ban on the larger models!
