In summary, crude oils differ in impurity levels and densities, meaning some require more extensive treatment and refinement before reaching the final product stage. This variance is what influences the initial market value of different crude grades.

For instance, consider Western Canadian Select (WCS) and West Texas Intermediate (WTI): As of now, WTI is priced at $77.12 per barrel, while WCS is at $52.21 per barrel. WCS, being a heavier oil, demands more refining, making it less valuable than WTI right from extraction.
