Reviving the Sinai: A Vision for a Greener Future

In early February, Ties van der Hoeven, a pioneer in climate solutions, traveled to Egypt to deliver a pivotal presentation to scientists and policymakers. This meeting could have significant implications for the future of our planet. His organization, The Weather Makers, is spearheading an initiative to rejuvenate one of Earth's most revered regions—the Sinai Desert. Collaborating with the Egyptian government, their goal is to transform this arid landscape into a fertile environment, altering the local climate in the process.

Within two decades, the Sinai could potentially revert to a hospitable state similar to that seen thousands of years ago. Historical cave paintings indicate that the region was once rich in trees and wildlife, flourishing less than 10,000 years ago. Texts from both the Koran and the Torah suggest that the Sinai functioned as a watershed, providing moisture and water to North Africa and Mesopotamia—regions inhabited by today's Arab states.

How can we revitalize a desert?

Evidence suggests that this ambitious endeavor is achievable. A notable success story comes from China, where the Loess Plateau—an area comparable in size to France—has been transformed from a barren landscape into a thriving green environment, showcasing the potential of large-scale renaturation.

The Weather Makers have laid out a comprehensive strategy for the Egyptian authorities and the scientific community. The plan involves using excavators to dredge the lagoon at the base of the Sinai Peninsula, thereby restoring the aquatic ecosystem of Lake Bardawil and reintroducing fish populations.

There are over 2.5 billion cubic meters of nutrient-rich sediment available for revitalizing wetlands. This sediment is packed with essential minerals and nutrients necessary for successful renaturation.

This sediment will serve as the foundation for eco-oases—greenhouses that will foster an ecosystem capable of producing food, soil nutrients, and drinking water.

Water plays a critical role in the success of this initiative. As night falls, the greenhouse will harvest drinking water through condensation on its dome, which can then be stored in tanks.

Microorganisms, specifically diatoms, will thrive in these tanks, creating an aquaponic system where microorganisms, seafood, and fish will flourish. This system will primarily benefit the inhabitants of Sinai, who will manage the eco-oasis.

The nutrients generated by the microorganisms and the drinking water can subsequently be used to expand agricultural land beyond the eco-oasis.

In the initial phase, 45 greenhouses will be constructed. While this number may vary, it is essential that the habitats are sufficiently large to eventually form a self-sustaining ecosystem, thereby creating a green network that can restore precipitation in the region.

Chapter 2: The Impact of a Green Sinai

How would a revitalized Sinai alter the climate? Historically, the Sinai served as a watershed teeming with life. Human activities, such as settlement and agriculture, led to its desolation. Deforestation and land clearing diminished vegetation, which compromised the soil's moisture retention.

Livestock trampled the young plants, further eroding the soil and leading to nutrient-rich mud accumulation in Lake Bardawil—material that the Weather Makers aim to utilize for the rejuvenation of the Sinai.

The loss of trees and moisture led to diminished rainfall and a shift in the local climate. This project seeks to reverse those changes. Revitalizing Sinai will reinitiate the "water begets water" feedback loop.

By restoring Lake Bardawil and enhancing the wetlands surrounding it, evaporation rates will increase, resulting in more moisture and biodiversity in the area.

This initiative could enhance fertility not just in Sinai, but across the broader region. Presently, the hot conditions in Sinai draw moist air from the Mediterranean toward the Indian Ocean. A cooler Sinai could retain more moisture, resulting in increased rainfall across the Middle East and North Africa.

Additionally, the Sinai coast is a crucial stopover for migratory birds. Revitalized wetlands would attract more of these birds, fostering greater biodiversity and introducing new plant species.

While the revival of Sinai remains a vision for now, it has a tangible plan. Many transformative projects began as the dreams of a few visionary individuals. The more this vision is shared, the greater the likelihood of its realization. It could mark a significant shift in humanity's impact on climate—from unintentional consequences to deliberate, positive change.

As Ties Van der Hoeven aptly puts it, "We’re not going to change humanity by saying, ‘Everything has to be less.’ No, we have to do more of the good things. Why don’t we come together and do something in a positive way?"
