Rediscovering My Passion for the Hospitality Industry

Written on

Chapter 1: The Call of the Industry

It's fascinating how unpredictable our passions can be.

Recently, I found myself in a situation where I inadvertently misled my audience. A few months back, I penned a blog entry declaring that I was done with the hospitality sector forever. I felt disillusioned with the industry, believing it was on its last legs, and the rewards didn’t justify the risks. Complaints seemed to echo everywhere, and the joy I once derived from it appeared to have vanished.

However, just weeks later, that familiar spark reignited within me, urging me to return. My perspective shifted dramatically when I stepped into a stunning vintage bank building dating back to 1905. The majestic marble walls and elegant brass elevator filled me with inspiration. Memories of my former nightclub, which had to close due to COVID-19, rushed back. I recalled the celebrations and the joy of unforgettable moments shared with patrons.

Suddenly, visions of delectable dishes and drinks being served to excited guests flooded my mind. I instinctively knew which performers to book, the lighting to install, and the types of plants that would enhance the atmosphere. My thoughts raced faster than a stomach reacting to a shot of poor-quality tequila.

I realized I was drawn back into the industry, despite my earlier assertions. My relationship with hospitality has always been tumultuous, which is why I walked away a couple of years ago. Initially, I felt at peace with that decision, but today, I find myself writing about my return with a joy comparable to a child entering Disneyland for the first time.

Section 1.1: A Painful Departure

What caused this change of heart? Like many others in the field, I faced significant challenges during the COVID lockdowns. In April 2020, I lost my nightclub, and a few months later, I sold my restaurant and shut down my entertainment business. The emotional toll was immense.

I grew disheartened, believing that the industry was fraught with risks and not resilient against crises. While some businesses adapted through delivery services, my restaurant faced unique difficulties, and my nightclub was not suited for such options.

As time passed, I fixated on the industry's downsides, using them as a rationale to stay away. My objective was to shield myself from the anguish I had recently experienced—I had lost my passion project.

Section 1.2: The Allure of Chaos

But, denial only worked for so long until that irresistible itch returned, and the enchanting bank space reignited my desire.

For those of us who thrive in chaos, few things are more exhilarating than witnessing people eagerly waiting to enter your venue, booking tables weeks in advance to enjoy an experience you meticulously crafted over time.

During a bustling night, you observe celebrations, friends sharing laughs, and the atmosphere filled with joy. Patrons often express their gratitude for hosting a remarkable event or serving an exquisite meal. If we’re being honest, it’s a fulfilling feeling.

Yet, the reality can shift dramatically.

“People are upset. They’re yelling about being turned away, their meals being cold, and one woman just spilled a drink on her pristine white dress. Oh, and someone accidentally set her hair on fire while leaning over a candle (yes, that really happened). What can we do about it? We might end up with a bad review… or five.”

Anyone familiar with the hospitality world understands this chaotic dance. However, that chaos can become addictive.

Chapter 2: Embracing the Passion

Life Lesson: Pursue What You Love

Hosting has always been a passion of mine, from planning events and arranging transportation for friends to organizing dining experiences and arranging club outings. I thrive on witnessing people savor new foods and drinks or experiencing spontaneous dance performances amidst a crowd.

When special occasions—birthdays, weddings, anniversaries—are celebrated in your venue, the pressure can be overwhelming. You hold the potential to create a memorable experience or ruin it entirely, leaving guests with lasting disappointment.

Despite the fear this pressure instills in many, I cherish it. I enjoy mingling with guests, ensuring they have a fantastic time, and crafting unforgettable experiences that contribute to lasting memories.

Subsection 2.1: The Flip Side of the Coin

However, there are downsides.

Witnessing a negative review can be gut-wrenching, especially when you know there was something that could have been done differently. In this industry, you strive to manage all the moving parts, but sometimes, everything spirals out of control.

This lack of control was what drove me away after losing my business. If my failures had been due to my own mistakes, it would have been easier to accept. But external factors beyond my influence played a significant role in my downfall.

Business, in general, comes with its challenges, and the hospitality sector is no exception. The potential for mishaps is numerous, and at times, the rewards seem insufficient to justify the struggle.

Yet, I've come to realize that the positives in this industry often outweigh those in many others. That realization is why I am back—alongside my genuine love for it.

Conclusion: A Change of Heart

I share this to acknowledge my earlier misjudgment in claiming I would never return to the industry.

As time progresses, we evolve, and with that growth, we strive to navigate our circumstances as best as we can. I wasn’t being dishonest; I spoke truthfully at that moment. However, I must be truthful now as well.

When I believed I had closed that chapter, passion reawakened within me and guided me back toward my true calling.

So here I am, pouring my heart into creating something extraordinary that will help others forge unforgettable memories.
