Maximizing Your Music Analytics: A DIY Guide for Artists

Written on

Chapter 1: Harnessing Digital Platforms

To thrive as an artist in today’s digital landscape, it’s crucial to fully utilize the analytics provided by your social media and music streaming platforms. This guide will explore essential platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram, highlighting their analytics features.

Let's delve into the specifics of each platform:

Section 1.1: Spotify Insights

Once you've set up your Spotify for Artists account, you can dive into its analytics tools. Spotify provides comprehensive data on your listeners, streams, and followers, alongside detailed performance metrics for individual songs and albums over various time frames—24 hours, 7 days, 28 days, or even since 2015. You can download this performance data in Excel format for easier analysis.

The audience insights section on Spotify for Artists is particularly valuable. It tracks daily changes in listener counts, streams, and followers, offering insights into streams per listener, saves, and playlist additions. Additionally, you can monitor unique listeners over the past two years, categorized into three groups: previously active, currently active, and those from programmed sources. Spotify also reveals the origins of your streams and provides demographic data about your audience, including gender and age, as well as a geographical breakdown of where your music is being played.

Section 1.2: Apple Music Analytics

Upon claiming your Apple Music for Artists page, you will gain access to analytics for your tracks. Key metrics include plays (Apple’s equivalent of streams), average daily listeners, song purchases, and Shazam counts. You can identify the top cities where your music is popular, as well as your most played and Shazamed tracks. The platform enables you to review data from the past week, along with historical data spanning 4, 8, and 12 weeks, as well as year-to-date and lifetime statistics. Similar to Spotify, you can download an Excel file containing your top-performing songs, along with detailed city-specific performance data.

Section 1.3: YouTube Performance Metrics

YouTube serves as another powerful tool for analyzing your music. To access the relevant data, navigate to your YouTube Studio page (studio.youtube.com). Here, you can track views, watch time, and subscriber gains over varying time frames—7, 28, 90, and 365 days—as well as lifetime statistics. The platform distinguishes between views for your standard videos and Shorts, and provides counts for both returning and unique viewers.

Section 1.4: Analyzing Facebook and Instagram

Facebook and Instagram analytics are accessed through your Meta Insights page, where you can view data for both platforms in one place. This tool provides metrics related to your reach, the number of published posts and stories, and your follower counts. You can select data from various time periods—weekly, monthly, or yearly. Additionally, it offers insights into visits and new page likes and followers. The audience section reveals follower counts, along with the top cities and countries represented among your audience. You can also evaluate the performance of individual posts on both platforms, including metrics such as reach, likes, comments, and shares.
