Let Go of Expectations for a Happier Life: Here's How

Chapter 1: Understanding Expectations
We often find ourselves holding expectations towards others. Whether it's doing something for a friend and anticipating reciprocation or assuming that certain behaviors are obvious, these expectations can lead to disappointment. A family doctor once shared with me that many individuals do not value their words and may tell you what you wish to hear without any intention of following through.
Expectations are a primary source of disappointment. Moreover, cultural differences can create misunderstandings—what seems normal to one person may not be perceived the same way by someone from a different background. Our upbringing shapes our perspectives on relationships and interactions, leading to varying expectations among individuals.
Sometimes, people can be selfish, and while we can't change that, it's essential to choose our friends carefully. By relinquishing expectations, we open ourselves up to genuine happiness. When others do something kind, we are pleasantly surprised instead of feeling let down when they don't meet our expectations.
I used to feel anxious when I went out of my way to help someone and received nothing in return. However, I came to realize that my joy in helping others shouldn't hinge on their response. I enjoy assisting people, and if I receive something back, it's a delightful surprise; if not, I accept it as part of my choice.
