Lesser-Known Facts About the Moon Missions
The Apollo missions hold a treasure trove of lesser-known stories. For instance, while many know Neil Armstrong as the first person to set foot on the lunar surface, he was not the first to witness an Earthrise from the Moon. That honor belongs to the astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders, who experienced this breathtaking view during the Apollo 8 mission, which orbited the Moon from December 21 to 27, 1968.
Following this historic journey, Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins embarked on the Apollo 11 mission from July 16 to 24, 1969. However, there remains a wealth of intriguing Moon lore that often goes unmentioned.
One captivating aspect is the Apollo 14 mission, which transported 500 seeds in sealed bags within a metal container. These seeds — including sycamore, redwoods, pines, firs, and sweetgums — were subsequently planted across the United States. Some of these trees have thrived and are now celebrated as 'moon trees,' marking the first flora to have traveled to the lunar surface.
While the Apollo 13 mission is renowned for its heroics, the Apollo 12 mission, led by Pete Conrad, often flies under the radar. Conrad, the third human to walk on the Moon, made a memorable declaration upon his lunar landing: "Whoopee! Man, that may have been a small one for Neil, but that’s a long one for me."
You might be curious why he ranks as the third person on the Moon rather than fourth, considering three astronauts were aboard Apollo 11. The reason lies in Michael Collins, who remained in lunar orbit while his fellow astronauts explored the Moon's surface. This left him in solitude, earning him the title of 'the loneliest man ever,' as he was surrounded by miles of empty space.
To date, twelve astronauts have walked on the Moon. Among them, four, including Buzz Aldrin, are still alive. Additionally, twice that number has visited the Moon, although half of them did not set foot on its surface. Notably, three astronauts have made two trips to the Moon.
