Can Fairness and Selfishness Coexist? A Deep Dive

Chapter 1: The Dilemma of Fairness and Selfishness
It’s curious how even the most trivial distractions can provoke profound thoughts. Recently, I found myself indulging in a reality TV show—a guilty pleasure, indeed—where the team leader had to select who would execute the final challenge, leading to one contestant's exit from the competition.

In this situation, she was expected to consider the performances of the contestants over the week. Although her own performance had been subpar, she opted to nominate someone else—one who had shown decent skills and another who had underperformed. Her reasoning was a blend of fairness to others and a selfish desire to protect her own position.
This scenario led me to ponder whether it is genuinely feasible to embody both fairness and selfishness in decision-making. When adhering to principles like equality and impartiality, one is acting fairly. Conversely, when prioritizing personal interests, selfishness comes into play. Therefore, when "you" are involved, bias inevitably creeps in.
Nonetheless, context plays a significant role in this discussion. For example, as a team leader, you might distribute tasks according to each member's strengths. If you assign yourself tasks that resonate with your abilities while leaving a colleague with a less favorable assignment, it leans towards selfishness. However, if the assignments are balanced and no one suffers, your decision can be deemed fair.
Hence, you can be seen as fair until your choices negatively impact others, at which point selfishness takes precedence. What are your thoughts? Is it possible to balance fairness with selfishness?

Chapter 2: The Complexity of Selfishness
In the exploration of selfishness, consider these insights from motivational content.
The first video titled "Be Selfish and Feel Good About It" emphasizes the importance of prioritizing oneself in order to foster personal growth and well-being.
Additionally, Gary Vaynerchuk in "You Have To Be Selfish! You Have To Take Care of Yourself!" delves into the necessity of self-care for achieving true effectiveness in life and work.
