The Essential Art of Listening: A Guide to Connection

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding Listening

In my past as an acupuncturist, I realized that my most vital role was not merely inserting needles but truly listening—with both my mind and my heart. This was not an easy task for me. As someone on the autism spectrum, I often found myself oversharing and eager to give advice. To help me focus on the importance of listening, I kept a poem displayed on my wall, which I read daily. Here’s an excerpt worth sharing:

Listening

You are NOT listening to me when…

  • You seem indifferent to my feelings.
  • You claim to understand before truly knowing me.
  • You rush to solve my issue before I've fully expressed it.
  • You interrupt me mid-sentence.
  • You find me tedious and don’t express it.
  • You critique my grammar, vocabulary, or accent.
  • You are eager to share your thoughts.
  • You relate your experiences, diminishing mine.
  • You engage with others while I’m speaking.
  • You dismiss my gratitude by saying it was nothing.

You ARE listening to me when…

  • You gently enter my world, allowing me to be myself.
  • You genuinely strive to comprehend me, even when I struggle to articulate.
  • You acknowledge my perspective, even if it contradicts your beliefs.
  • You recognize that our conversation may leave you feeling a bit exhausted.
  • You respect my ability to make choices, even if they seem misguided.
  • You do not take my burdens away but support me in navigating them.
  • You hold back on giving unsolicited advice when I’m not prepared.
  • You provide space for me to realize the situation on my own.
  • You graciously accept my gratitude and express how fulfilling it is to help.
