Empowering Sleep: A Mother’s Journey to Well-being and Joy
Written on
Chapter 1: The Path to Motherhood
My experience with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) didn't deter my aspiration to become a mother. I desired not just one child but two, maybe even more when the time is right. My intrinsic maternal instincts have always been strong, and I strive to embody the ideal mother I've envisioned, showcasing the power of manifestation.
However, challenges arise daily. Life tests us in myriad ways, pushing for growth rather than signaling defeat. I embrace these challenges.
Navigating bilingualism? No problem; it's second nature to me. Moving to a new country at 11? A bit tough, but I'll make new friends. Faced with bullying? I choose kindness as my response. Betrayed by a partner? That's their loss. Childhood hurdles? A continual journey of healing. PCOS? I swiftly educate myself and prepare for the child I know is coming.
As for "mum cliques" and judgment? I’ve outgrown that phase. But sleep deprivation? Now that’s a real struggle.
Everyone has their unique journey, and how we tackle these tests shapes our progress. As Oscar Wilde said, "Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." Isn’t that a beautiful sentiment?
Chapter 2: Embracing Self-Care Amidst Parenting
My four-year-old son, Andriel, loves to play superheroes, often dressing as Spin or Black Panther. Recently, I encouraged him to design his own superhero costume, believing that other children will want to imitate him; he's truly remarkable.
One must be their own biggest supporter. You can achieve anything you desire, but it will always be your authentic self. While some circumstances are beyond our control, they won't hinder our goals unless we allow them to. It's about recognizing that we possess the power to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively.
Finding My Joy Through Sleep
This is where I faced a significant test of my capabilities as a mother and an individual. I was exhausted—not just the regular tiredness that a cup of coffee could fix, but the kind that made me question my ability to drive safely with my child in the backseat.
Chronic exhaustion is perilous because it becomes a norm, causing many to merely exist rather than thrive. I confronted my fatigue before it spiraled out of control. I recognized that when I was sleep-deprived with my firstborn, my joy was slowly being stolen. I loved my baby, yet my days blurred together, consumed by thoughts of sleep logistics for both of us.
The Importance of Sleep Training
It has been a challenge reconciling the need for self-care, especially when many mothers shy away from openly prioritizing it. I poured my energy into ensuring my son slept well, often at the cost of my own rest. Reflecting on it now, I see that he wasn't getting adequate sleep either, as I was so focused on meeting his sleep needs that I overlooked my own.
Fortunately, Andriel's sleep significantly improved once I implemented sleep training. I gradually learned to acknowledge that prioritizing my sleep and mental health was crucial for my child's well-being. I wanted us to genuinely enjoy our days together, not just survive until bedtime.

In the following video, a pediatrician shares essential tips for sleep training, helping parents navigate this often-challenging aspect of parenting.
Finding Balance and Mindful Presence
I take pride in enjoying my time with my boys because I have established clear boundaries for myself and them. By setting aside dedicated time for each, I can meet and exceed expectations for both my children and myself.
Being present unlocks the potential to savor each day. When you elevate your awareness, even mundane moments sparkle. I find joy in small things—a sunny day, a butterfly fluttering by—because deliberate presence makes everything more vibrant.
Conclusion: Give Yourself Permission
If you're a weary parent, allow yourself to make necessary changes that align with your goals and elevate your life’s purpose. This will empower your child to thrive as well.
As a Pediatric Sleep Coach, I've witnessed countless families transform their lives by prioritizing sleep.
