Effective Strategies for Managing Anxiety in Just 60 Seconds

Written on

Chapter 1: The Power of Breath

Every day, I receive inquiries about managing anxiety, which prompts me to share these helpful strategies:

Q: "Mr. Barnes, I hope you don't mind me asking for your advice. I struggle with severe anxiety, and while I know you're not a medical professional, I wonder if you could recommend a book or course that might be beneficial. You've developed a commendable routine that seems to work for you."

A: First and foremost, take a deep breath. Set a timer on your watch and practice deep, slow diaphragmatic breathing for a minute every hour or so. Aim for at least once every three hours; however, if it were me, I would do it hourly. If you try this today, let me know how it goes tomorrow, and I’ll provide you with another tip.

If you start with this technique, the Firedance program could be a great resource. However, you must first commit to this initial step of the "MAGIC Formula." Establish a clear plan. Tackling stress at a physiological level is far more effective than years of therapy. Once you've disrupted the physical cycle of anxiety, therapies such as coaching, counseling, meditation, or journaling can become immensely beneficial.

Take ACTION. To maintain a positive trajectory, simply BREATHE correctly for sixty seconds every few hours. As long as you avoid a "zero," you remain engaged in the process.

Embrace GRATITUDE. Focusing on gratitude can counteract fear and anger. If you center your thoughts on positive experiences during your breathing exercises, you engage in a mini Firedance ritual!

Clarify your INTENTION. Your goals should focus on moving away from discomfort and toward joy. There are countless ways to achieve this, but first, ensure you have a clear path to follow.

Have MASSIVE COURAGE AND CONFIDENCE. Trust that you are capable and deserving of taking these steps. If any doubts arise, delve into the science of stress, the body's feedback systems, and the vast array of teachings on movement and meditation available globally. Recognize that you deserve to THRIVE. If you experience inner conflict regarding self-care, remember that taking this initial step will lead you to address any feelings of selfishness associated with prioritizing your well-being, even if just for a moment each day.

Ultimately, the Five Minute Miracle represents a small yet significant act of self-care, safeguarding your emotional well-being. If you need to bolster your motivation, visualize your inner child while breathing and commit to protecting her. Alternatively, remind yourself that "you are not the voices in your head." Whatever it takes to keep you moving forward, take that next step and the one after that. Make it your mission to reclaim your life, heart, and mind from external pressures.

The journey begins with a simple action: short-circuit the societal norms and connect with your intrinsic life force.

And remember, this connection is never more than a single breath away.

Namaste,

Steve
